Home is not just a place, it’s a feeling. The colors and design of a home should reflect the people who live inside. Choosing the right furniture is an integral part of decorating, but getting a specific style that is perfectly tailored to your needs and lifestyle can be quite difficult. Shopping for furniture is all fun and games until you realize you can’t fit the cupboard in your bedroom! That’s why choosing the right size furniture is a must.
The key to great design is capturing the essence of the space. You must choose the right form, color and size to complement your room. While choosing the right size of furniture, it’s really important to know the measurements of your house. Having stunning pieces won’t help much if you can’t even navigate through the rooms comfortably.
Although form, color and material are all personal preferences, size is a different story. The size of your furniture should be proportional to the size and shape of your room. Let’s dive into the steps of choosing furniture and getting it right.
The first and foremost step is to determine what you will actually use each room for. Think about the obvious functions, will you be using this space for other purposes?
For instance, if you intend to create a study area in one of your bedrooms in the future, you should consider purchasing smaller beds to accommodate all.
Measure the length and width of your room using a tape measure or yardstick. Also, take into consideration the dimensions of any recessed area in the room. This will determine the size of your furniture, as well as whether your room appears crowded or spacious.
Having a designated space for each piece of furniture makes it easier to find the correct size while purchasing. It would make little sense to buy large furniture for a small room or small furniture for a large room. Make sure that the furniture’s measurements are compatible with the room’s dimensions. So before you buy any item, always measure it to ensure that it will fit in the space you have.
Once you figure out the dimensions of the item you want to purchase, draw it out on the floor where you intend to put it.
You know how sometimes you can just walk into a room and instantly sense that something is missing? We might have the answer you need – texture! Texture of a furniture is the thing that makes a room pop. An important, yet often neglected factor to consider is what each piece of furniture is made out of. Choosing furniture that will last as long as possible should be your top priority.
The textures and textiles of a couch, chair or bedroom collection are extremely important considerations for any homeowner. This is because some textiles and textures last longer than others. Furniture made of nylon, olefin and polyester appears to last longer. The textures and textiles are excellent indicators of your furniture’s durability.
•For homes with limited space, sectional sofas and benches can be used as dividers.
•No furniture should be blocking other appealing features or special décor in your room.
•Pick the right area rug! Choosing a rug that fits with all of the furniture in a room will create a more unified look.
•A sofa should never extend beyond a wall or be left alone in an open area.
There’s a famous saying that goes, “Pick your furniture like you pick a life partner; it should make you feel comfortable and look nice”, and we couldn’t agree more with this statement! Your home should tell the story of who you are. When it comes to furnishing your home, try not to get carried away by impulse purchases or hurry. If it does not make you smile then it does not deserve to be in your home.
